Work in Canada – How to Get a Work Permit
Updated: Dec 22, 2021
To work in Canada is a dream that many people hold. Canada is thoroughly welcoming global talent that supports the country’s economy and labour needs. There are over a hundred ways to get a work permit in Canada, and it can be challenging to navigate all of them. Every employment pathway operates under two main categories:
Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) International Mobility Program (IMP)
How to Get a Work Permit Under TFWP and IMP
TFWP exists to tackle the labour shortage issues in Canada. The significant difference between these two programs is the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), which shows the Canadian government a genuine need for foreign workers. For TFWP work permits, an employer applies for an LMIA. Once they get a positive assessment, their foreign worker can apply for a work permit to IRCC to get approval to work in Canada.
Under IMP, however, an LMIA is not required since it is a program that focuses on propelling Canada's economic position forward through global experts. Acquiring a work permit through the IMP option can be done by the employer or the foreign worker. Either an employer can bring in a foreign worker, or a worker can apply and work for an employer of their choice. The many LMIA-exempt options that fall under the IMP are usually a result of Canada's free trade agreements that allows foreign workers to apply without needing the labour assessment document.
Coming to Canada is life-changing. It's a matter of giving you and your family a better life. Have the right team at your side.
