How to Improve Your IELTS Score for Canadian Immigration

Updated: Jan 31, 2022

If you want to immigrate to Canada, you must prove your language skills by taking an approved language test. Depending on your profession, you may need a higher or lower score. This blog post will discuss ways to improve your IELTS band score. We will provide tips and advice on studying for the test and how to improve your English language skills. Keep reading!

Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation

If your answers have grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors, you'll lose marks. So, make sure to pay close attention to grammar, spelling, and punctuation in the writing test.

Dealing with Hard Questions

Remember that there is no concept of negative points in IELTS. Don't spend too much time if you don't know the answer to a question in the listening or reading section. Make a guess and move on to the next question.

Fluency Over Vocabulary

Remember that you'll be graded based on how effectively you communicate your ideas. Fluency matters more than vocabulary and accent when it comes to the speaking test. If you keep thinking about the vocabulary or focus too much on the pronunciation, you might get nervous and lose pace during a conversation.

Words Limit

You'll lose marks if you don't meet the minimum word limit in the writing test, i.e., a minimum of 150 words for Task 1 and 250 words for Task 2. Practice to learn how long 150 and 250 words look in handwriting, so you don't face any problems during the test.

Read The Question Before Listening To The Audio

Each recording will be played only once in the listening section, so carefully read the questions before listening to the audio. When listening, write answers on the question paper before transferring them onto the answer sheet.

Time Management

In your writing test, Task 2 is worth more than Task 1, so make sure to manage the time accordingly. Ideally, you should give 40 minutes to Task 2 and 20 minutes to Task 1.

Extend Your Answers

In the speaking test, try to expand upon your answers as much as possible. This will demonstrate that you have a high level of English proficiency and can communicate effectively in the language. To improve your band score, you need to practice speaking fluently and giving detailed responses.

Read Instructions

Carefully read the instructions of each IELTS section and follow the given advice to make sure you know how to respond to the questions.

Practice

Make sure to complete at least one or two full IELTS practice tests before taking the actual test. You can find plenty of IELTS preparation materials and free IELTS practice tests online.

These are a few important tips for scoring your best in the IELTS exam. Make sure to eat and sleep well before your test day to maintain your focus during the test.
